IPVanish is one of the best VPN services in the world. This network offers access to 40,000 IP addresses and to over 1,000 servers located in around 70 cities around the world. The company’s headquarters is in the USA.
IPVanish – Settings
IPVanish is a service that offers a rather small number of settings.
* All IP addresses are almost entirely masked due to the GDPR which has been introducted in May 2018.
The Android app also offers few options in the settings.
Among the available protocols there is only OpenVPN (TCP/UDP), which, fortunately, is still a good option.
IPVanish – Locations
IPVanish servers are located in 70 different cities around the world. Examples of locations can be found on the following screenshots from the application.
Most servers available with IPVanish allow you to use P2P networks.
IPVanish – speed tests – PC
Before testing performance of particular servers, I first check the parameters of the direct connection.
Download speed in the test was 47.2 Mb/s, upload speed 24.9 Mb/s, ping 33 ms.
After testing the direct connection, it is time to test through VPN servers. The first country on my test list is Germany.
At the bottom of the window, you can see that the connection was established through a server located in Frankfurt. In the top, however, Locating… is still displayed. Fortunately, this is not a big drawback. 🙂 Connections are encrypted all the time. All Internet tools to check the IP address and location display VPN server data so the user data are properly hidden.
The following screenshot shows the results of a connection speed test performed by the server located in Germany.
The download speed decreased from 47.2 Mb/s to 38.9 Mb/s (which is 82.5% of the initial speed).
The upload speed dropped from 24.9 Mb/s to 23.7 Mb/s (95%).
Ping was extended from 33 ms to 72 ms (increase by 39 ms).
The download speed (49.5 Mbps) is approximately 100% of the speed of the direct connection.
The upload speed (23.6 Mb/s) is 94.5% of the upload speed with direct connection (24.9 Mb/s).
Ping was extended from 33 ms to 90 ms (increase by 57 ms).
I check the parameters of the direct connection once more before checking the parameters while the VPN is connected.
Latency was 33 ms this time, the download speed was 48.6 Mb/s, and the upload speed was 25.3 Mb/s.
As you can see on the screen above, the word Locating… appeared in the upper part of the window. This is a small error in the program code, which does not affect the connection security in any way. It will probably be repaired soon in one of the next updates.
The results of the test when connected via Boston are on the screen below.
For this connection, the download speed is 5.7 Mb/s, which is 11.7% of the direct connection speed (48.6 Mb/s).
The upload speed (20.5 Mb/s) is 81.1% of the direct connection speed (25.3 Mb/s).
Ping was extended by 158 ms – 33 ms = 125 ms.
This time the results were slightly worse due to the large distance between Poland and Los Angeles.
The download speed (7.2 Mb/s) is only 14.8% of the speed of the direct connection (48.6 Mb/s).
The upload speed (8.41 Mb/s) is 33.3% of the speed of the direct connection (25.3 Mb/s).
Ping increased by 233 ms – 33 ms = 200 ms.
Despite this, the connection is suitable for fairly easy use. For example, you can watch videos in 720p quality without any issues.
The average grade from the above four tests is 3.80 for all applications and 4.50 for text, photo and video watching in SD and HD quality.
IPVanish – speed tests – mobile
The download speed of the direct connection was 56.5 Mb/s, the upload speed was 24.8 Mb/s, ping 29 ms.
The first country on the list of my tests – Germany.
The download speed (18.7 Mb/s) is 33% of the speed of the direct connection (56.5 Mb/s).
The upload speed (14.4 Mb/s) is 58.1% of the speed of the direct connection (24.8 Mb/s).
Ping was extended by 72 ms – 29 ms = 43 ms.
The following screenshot shows the appearance of the application connected by the United Kingdom.
Speed test results are similar to the results obtained when connecting via Germany.
17.5 Mb/s is 30.9% of the download speed on the direct connection (56.5 Mb/s).
12.1 Mb/s is 48.9% of the direct connection upload speed (24.8 Mb/s).
Ping increased by 100 ms – 29 ms = 71 ms.
Before performing the other two tests, I check the parameters of the direct connection again.
The results are excellent – download 59.7 Mb/s, upload speed 25 Mb/s, ping 36 ms.
Unfortunately, this connection is clearly slower compared to the connection via Boston with the Windows application. It is also very weak compared to the direct connection test, which was made literally 2-3 minutes earlier.
Downloading at the level of 0.68 Mb/s, sending 0.15 Mb/s and ping 250 ms are parameters that, unfortunately, will not allow to use the network freely.
Probably these results are caused by a heavy load of the selected server, which seems to be confirmed when you see at the test results presented below.
The download speed (3.1 Mb/s) is 5.2% of the download speed of the direct connection (59.7 Mb/s).
The upload speed (0.5 Mb/s) is 1.8% of the speed of the direct connection (25 Mb/s).
Ping increased by 384 ms – 36 ms = 348 ms.
This connection is good enough to view photos and text, and to watch 480p video (maybe even HD 720p).
The average rating from four tests on Android is 3.15 for all applications and 3.83 for viewing text, photos and watching SD / HD video.
- A large part of the servers available with IPVanish has a suffix of the hostname in the form of .ipvanish.com. You can check this by connecting through any server and visiting whatismyip.net or whatsmyip.org.
2. Sometimes the location displayed by various websites may differ from each other despite using the same IP address.
The above example shows how various services display Los Angeles or Dallas location when connected via LA.
This is a normal phenomenon and does not indicate any disadvantage of a given VPN. Such situations happen even in case of direct connections (without using the VPN network).
3. IPVanish is one of the few services I use regularly. In November 2018, I purchased a 2-year subscription for a promotional price.
IPVanish – Pros & Cons
– very convenient, intuitive interface, available for many platforms;
– “Best City” and “Best Server” options (additionally “Best Country” on smartphones);
– P2P works on almost every server;
– 10 simultaneous connections;
– connections, depending on the server’s location, are faster or slower, but 100% stable (the connection does not break even when it is established for a few hours);
– this is one of the few services I have no problems with at all.
– the hostname “ipvanish.com” on some servers (such feature can also be considered an advantage);
– not the fastest connection speed through the Android app;
– it is not the cheapest VPN service in the world, but it is definitely worth that price.
